I have frequently made a certain statement that usually precipitates gasps of incredulity. I have said, and I totally believe, that all things real are invisible. I have defended this position often but with little success of persuasion.

Our “reality” is determined by what we can see, what we can touch, and what we can hear, smell, and taste…i.e., the five senses. These five senses are how we experience and navigate our environment and they are all miraculously implanted within us. Without them, our lives would be dark, silent, and lonely. (Notwithstanding the heroism of Anne Sullivan.)   However, these five senses are merely transmitters of phenomena and do not directly create what we experience through them. That magic is in our brains’ ability to receive the transmission of the senses and create our experience of “reality.”

For example, we “see” because our eyes recognize the electromagnetic wavelengths of light. The eyes transmit these wavelength signals to the brain. The brain receives these signals and translates them into shape and color which we recognize. At times variables within the eye may distort incoming wavelength signals such as color blindness. I may see red, and my brother see green. Who is right? Both of us.

And the same is true of the other senses. Sound waves are transmitted to the brain through the ear and translated to Beethoven. Sensory neurons respond to skin pressure which sends an electrical message to our brain that lets us know that we have touched something like babies or puppies. Smell is receptors in the nose that identify inhaled molecules which are, once again, transmitted to the brain which interprets them as distinct odors…cabbage or Chanel. Taste is recognized by the brain from the receptors in the nose and tongue. Together they are dispatched brainward and translated as taste like buttermilk or butter pecan.

The bottom line is that everything we perceive is generated outside of our body by invisible phenomena that are fundamental and real…light waves, sound waves, molecules, and atoms.  It is an inside job.  We are fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works.
